An excerpt from Community (Hukkat, June 26, 2004)
Through the Mourner’s Kaddish, we sanctify God – speaking of creation, blessing, song and peace when it might feel more natural to talk of loss and focus on our sorrow. It came to exemplify Judaism for me, this understanding that whatever may be happening in our lives, it is our obligation to see outside ourselves and our immediate experience, that we might continue to recognize the larger beauty and blessing of the world. Through this wider lens, I felt, we could keep in touch with our role in the community at large when we most risked isolating ourselves in our grief.
